Youth participation in the campaign for the abolition of the death penalty in Belarus

On 13 February representatives of RADA met with Amnesty International.

Amnesty International is an international non-governmental organization, founded in the UK in 1961, which aims to “undertake research and actions aimed at preventing and ending violations of the rights to physical and psychological integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, freedom from discrimination in the context of its work”.

The organization’s research work enables regular monitoring of the human rights situation in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and other regions. Amnesty International publishes annual reports and studies, carries out companies and emergency assistance activities aimed at stopping gross human rights violations.

Representatives of RADA and Amnesty International discussed the issues of young people’s participation in the company for abolition of the death penalty in Belarus, teaching human rights, general trends of the situation of young people’s rights in Europe.

Amnesty International prepared a special briefing as part of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the UN Human Rights Council, RADA also prepared first UPR on Youth Rights in Belarus.

In addition, Amnesty International provides its vision of the death penalty in Belarus. In 2019, at least three people were executed in Belarus, while three others were sentenced to death. In 2020, two people were already shot. Belarus is the last country in Europe and the former Soviet Union to use the death penalty.
