Statement of the BNYC “RADA” on the release of 250 prisoners
On 19 March 2026, it became known about the release of 250 individuals, including 15 who were forcibly transferred to Lithuania. The release took place against the backdrop of negotiations between Lukashenko and a United States delegation headed by John Coale, which were held on 18 March 2026.
We welcome the news of the release of 250 political prisoners in Belarus, among whom are journalists, human rights defenders, and other representatives of civil society. Each release constitutes a meaningful victory for human dignity and solidarity. The BNYC “RADA” extends its congratulations to the families and shares in this long-awaited joy. At the same time, we underline that a significant number of individuals remain behind bars on politically motivated grounds1. Among them are young Belarusians who have been deprived of their liberty for participating in peaceful protests, engaging in civic activism, and expressing their views.
We are particularly concerned about the systemic nature of the persecution of young people. In recent years, youth have become one of the most vulnerable groups subjected to repression. This is manifested in arbitrary detentions, criminal prosecution, pressure within educational institutions, and restrictions on opportunities for professional and personal development.
We emphasize that:
- persecution for one’s civic position, including among young people, is unacceptable;
- the deprivation of liberty of young people inflicts long-term harm on Belarusian society;
- the release of a portion of political prisoners does not resolve the issue of political persecution as a whole.
The Belarusian National Youth Council “RADA” continues to insist on:
- the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners in Belarus, along with their full rehabilitation;
- an end to the practice of forcibly expelling released political prisoners as a form of repression;
- the restoration of opportunities for free civic and political activity in Belarus.
Freedom and human rights must be guaranteed to each and every individual — without exception.
