Statement of the BNYC “RADA” regarding the protests in Türkiye

On March 19, the Turkish authorities arrested the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, the main political opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, accusing him of corruption. Ekrem İmamoğlu and his supporters claim that this case is driven by political motives. As part of this case, more than 100 people, including politicians, journalists, and businesspeople, were also detained. In response, thousands of people took to the streets, and mass protests have continued across the country for seven consecutive nights. The authorities have declared the demonstrations “illegal,” and the police have been violently dispersing protesters. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, more than 1400 people have been detained. The harsh actions of law enforcement have sparked strong condemnation from human rights organizations and the international community.
The Belarusian National Youth Council “RADA” expresses deep concern over the situation in Turkey regarding the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the subsequent peaceful protests by citizens defending democratic values. We strongly condemn any repressive actions by the authorities aimed at peaceful demonstrators and independent journalists covering these events.
Freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly are fundamental pillars of a democratic society. Attempts to suppress civil society, persecute opposition leaders, and use force against peaceful protesters are unacceptable. We stand in solidarity with the Turkish people in their fight for justice, democracy, and the rule of law.
RADA calls on the Turkish authorities to immediately end violence against peaceful demonstrators, ensure their safety, and act in accordance with international human rights standards. We also demand the release of all unjustly detained protest participants, including media representatives, as well as the release of Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu.
RADA supports the Turkish National Youth Council GoFor in its struggle for democracy and freedom of speech. We believe that the voices of young people and civil society play a crucial role in building a future based on freedom, justice, and respect for the rights of every individual. International solidarity and support are more important than ever, and we urge the international community to pay attention to this situation and stand up for the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Türkiye.
